Charity: water Close
in praise of a good idea

Culture: in praise of a good idea

This is a three cheers post: the wonderful thing about blog-sites (and I’m very surprised to hear myself putting wonderful and blog together in the same sentence) is that you can honestly cheer for something you think is good and valuable without necessarily there being any agenda. Or any need to fill up the page just for the sake of it, which tends to be the case with our local paper here in Brisbane these days. So, three cheers for Alison Kubler, who always seems to be involved, with gusto and charm, in any number of positive, interesting projects about town. Ms Kubler is currently curator at the very fine Queensland University of Technology Art Museum, at Garden’s Point in the city. But she is also part of a little venture that is designed, I suspect, to provide another opportunity for artists to get together and enjoy themselves, if ever they needed an excuse. Called One Night Only, it’s an artshow, yep, that runs for one night only. Sorting through the information about One Night Only at ark atelier in Spring Hill, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a very neat idea: the artist (Matt Malone is the man this month, that’s one of his above, from his Urban Scrawl series) has work displayed and an opening night do; the architect’s office has new artwork up in their premises for a month or so, and then it’s replaced with new work, and a new opening night. Sounds as if everyone’s a winner. Ms Kubler is working with Nadine Cameron on this not-for-profit venture (if works are for sale, all proceeds go to the artist, sans commission). Kubler, you’ve done it again. Matt Malone’s One Night Only is Tuesday 20 Feb at 6.30pm. (nandapresentonenightonly@gmail.com)
