Charity: water Close
world environment day?

Conscience, Design, Environment, Fashion, Food: world environment day?

That was quick. I remember wanting to know more about this day and here it is, ticking away. I know Bob Brown is speaking tonight at the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University, South Bank. Perhaps if nothing else, look out the window, catch a cloud moving by, close your eyes and think of the silent rainforest and the moonlit ocean. As a species we often need visible cues to respond to our environment. Today, the most impacting results of our ways are either invisible or yet to come. I believe our most pressing challenge is to plan to alter the demand-supply chain of the manufacturing, agricultural, energy, transport and urban development industries (and then some) from Industrial Age developments to new, sustainable theories and practices. To raise the next generation up in a new belief system.

SNAP. I was just writing about this, you beat me!

This is what I was going to post….

“World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Forget the information overload about environmental issues, I think we should just go experience the environment to make up our own minds. I was driving through the Sunshine Coast hinterland on the weekend, and in those times when confronted by such beautiful landscapes, I’m always in awe of nature and its amazing complexity, scale and age. I think there’s something inherent about being drawn to nature, and it’s no accident that some of the most popular places to visit and live in our cities are heavily connected to ideas of nature, landscape and place. Especially in urban settings, I say we celebrate these kinds of days by reconnecting to the environment in our own individual ways – whether it’s just contemplating the clouds or spending time in the garden. Anything that reminds us that we are part of something bigger can be a powerful thing”

What a good idea! Silly me… My six year old reminded me of “W.E.D.” this morning at breakfast time (bad mother!) and so we rode our bikes through the bushy shortcut to school – cool air on our faces, and a renewed vigour to start the day.

I liked it so much I hooked up with a friend on the nearest bike path and kept going to Gap Creek Road – the whip birds letting us know that nature is truly not away from the city – it’s part of the city. What a beautiful place this city can be! Yes, the mobile phone was ringing crazy reminding me that I should be working, but it was worth every minute.

Relocalisation is what Josh is talking about – I say bring it on!

I think two things need to happen, something I call top down theory. On an individual scale (down theory), I believe we all need to reconnect with Earth and her environment. Deep ecology and despair and empowerment work done by such people as John Seed, Ruth Rosenhek and Joanna Macy are such offerings that can help people realise this. And then our elected leaders, business leaders and entrepreneurs can lead from the so called ‘top’ and bring about change, policy and consciousness with great reach and effect. Together the two meet in the middle and change occurs. A pre-dawn dip in the big blue and watching water that has fallen over an edge for the past millenia are also helpful to reconnect. Why just last night in this beautiful rain we’re having, I was outside and stopped to scoop up pure drinking water that had fallen from the sky and was now running down a gutter. Isn’t that the most amazing and beautiful thing in this world?
