Conscience: the fuel fossil.

“Oil is our god. I don’t care if you worship Buddha, Jesus, Allah, whoever. They actually worship petroleum”. This is the opening line from the trailer for the film A Crude Awakening. Winner of seven international awards around the world it aims to highlight we are running out of cheap and readily available oil. I’m sure many cinemas will not pick it up, so look out for it at your local video shop or order it online. Closer to home and in Melbourne Conservo petrol station has opened. Conservo markets itself as a “green” service station, offering biofuel blends and organic products. The fuels offer a blend of biodiesel and ethanol products suitable for a wide variety of cars. Any car made after 1986, in other words that is fuel injected, can fill up at the station. While customers will pay a similar price at the bowser, the organic components of these fuels, at least, are Australian made and require far less energy to transport than fuel shipped from overseas. As a race we are endowed with such vision, responsibility and intellect but also such short sightedness that at times we get stuck in first gear, willing for someone to get us going. I’m feeling very excited right now however at the continue signs of both top down and bottom up vision and efforts which are occurring right now with great benefits.

    I’m Looking forward to seeing this film Josh. In terms of getting DVDs. For those who don’t know. Morgan at Urban Grind, Paddington has An Inconvenient Truth and The End of Suburbia that he lends out to people for free for two days. I am sure he will have a copy of this when it comes out too. It’s a great community idea of his (among many).

    I wish it was my idea, but it came from a Doctor that I know. I also have who killed the electric car? They are all out and in fact, I can’t find my copy of The End of Suburbia. Carl do you still have it? I am sure that you brought it back, but you are the last lead that I can think of. And, yes I will get a copy of this movie for the shop. I too wold like to see this one. I understand that SUVs are still growing in popularity despite the conversation that the world has started having.

    I saw the premier screening of this movie a few weeks ago when Qld Conservation Council hosted it at the Schonell. It was slightly depressing, if not illuminating and just confirmed the need for us to see through the political veneer and start demanding more action and foresight from our leaders. Top down action is becoming a frustrating process – guess it’s up to us at the grass roots to make the changes. I’ve now completely decided to walk my talk. Going car-free with two little boys under 6 is a challenge, but a great adventure – you learn to adapt to the ebbs and flows of public transport, and to develop great calf muscles on the pushy ; )

    Wow Emma that’s pretty inspirational. Not sure if I could do that just yet. I wish it wasn’t a case of having to go without and that we could actually just get cars/transport that didn’t depend on fossil fuels and were 100% environmentally friendly. The technology is there!
