There’s a new book I haven’t yet laid eyes on and while I can’t be sure I’ll like the content, I like the concept driving it. The 1000 Journals Project by Someguy was published in 2007 and is a collection of random pages from 1000 empty journals sent on their merry way around the world in search of bleeding hearts, soulful beings, and impulsive doodlers to make their mark on their stark white pages. When Someguy became intrigued by the scratches on public toilet doors, bus stop benches, and alleyway walls he thought of making his intrigue into a project. He bought 1000 (seemed like a good number at the time) journal books and posted them out to people, left them at cafes, bus stops, libraries and bars. That was the year 2000. Now in 2007, only one has made its way back to him, although pages from those still floating around the globe have been scanned and sent to him one by one. From these offerings, he has compiled an official journal and published it as a collaborative experiment to show methods of interactivity and creativity shared among friends and strangers. Look out for one of the remaining 999 traveling journals, or purchase the compiled copy to get a taste of how freely people can open their souls and creative sentiments when no-one is watching.
