pecha kucha.

Culture, Design, Technology, Travel: pecha kucha.

From the source: Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 80 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation.

Tonight that conversation is taking place at the Powerhouse from 8pm. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Go, sip, meet, question, laugh, learn.

I went along last night and was so buoyed to see the number of smart, creative, young and local people doing great things in Brisbane. Also super inspiring to see that some of them have travelled the world, learnt lots and still returned to settle and share the knowledge. This is a great idea

How cool is this! I can’t wait to be at the next one. I understand that last night there was a girl that was showing her emergency shelter that she won overseas awards for. It was developed in Brisbane and featured by Achitechure for Humanity. I have seen pictures of their design so many times, but had no idea that it was produced in my own back yard. Brisbane Rocks!

Apparently there was a great turn out to Brisbane’s first Pecha Kucha, with another event planned for October. Booya.

Disregard my previous comment. Seems that I had all of my facts wrong. Oops. Sounds like what the speaker was doing though was very cool.

Bugged that I missed it – Josh give us the details for October when you know them!

    Late reply, but…
Hahaha Morgan, that was me presenting the emergency shelter. Yeap you did get the facts wrong. It was designed and constructed in Berkeley, California, while I was studying over there, but it did win the American institute of architects student design award and published in a number of books.

Thank you for all the great comments on Pecha Kucha. It really is a great way to network and showoff the amazing talent in our hometown!

Our next event is 5th March @ 20:20 and another planned for April in conjunction with youth week!
