Brisbane Powerhouse will play host to a different kind of music festival this month. Restrung: A New Chamber Music Festival is putting a contemporary spin on chamber music through a series of concerts, workshops, string-inspired installations and discussion forums. There is also plenty in store for those who prefer traditional classical music.
Leading the charge is UK chamber music stars The Brodsky Quartet, who have carved a celebrated niche into the classical music scene. Known for their spirited strings and faultless classical repertoire, The Brodsky Quartet have also collaborated with the likes of Sting, Bjork and Paul McCartney. A line-up of local, national and international performers will display their talents over the subsequent four days.
For those who enjoy their chamber music with a twist (or are willing to give it a go), check out Fourplay. This talented foursome rock out with a mix of original and covered songs, including well known tunes from Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, and Radiohead. Watching a classically trained violinist rip up a Metallica classic is quite a spectacle to behold and one that comes highly recommended as an experience like no other.
Other acts include Brisbane’s own Topolgy and Clocked Out Duo. There will also be an ongoing program of free live performances and an artist forum where punters can get involved in answering the big questions surrounding contemporary chamber music.
For those interested in being a part of a new generation of chamber music practice and performance, this is one festival not to miss!
