Conscience, Environment: the answer is 350

We all know our daily habits have to change to increase our chances for a better environment and its future. Driving the car less, eating locally, carbon off-setting and switching to green energy are just a few examples to get the ball rolling. Global warming guru Bill McKibben has a simple answer to making our world a green place. That answer is 350. That’s the parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere that scientists believe is safe. Currently the world sits at 387 parts per million and with a little persistence the world can lower its carbon emission to 350. Join 350.org to take action in your community, engage our world leaders and build an international movement to solve the climate crisis. Listen to the music video that anyone, regardless of the language you speak, can understand. It illustrates perfectly what’s wrong with the way we live and the goal (350) we should work toward. Some groups have already taken action. A church in the United States began their campaign by ringing its church bell 350 times to spread the call for 350 action (view other sources of inspiration online). Hopefully 350 will bring millions of voices to the table to discuss the greatest predicament human civilization faces; the challenge to wean ourselves off coal and oil and do it while still allowing the poor parts of the world to develop.

Hi Lizzy – what a great idea to try to bridge global political gaps in responding to climate change. I recently read Bill McKibben’s Deep Economy and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in being part of redefining of our current (mostly economic) sense of prosperity.

Thanks for the reference Sam. And Lizzy, this is an excellent example of a simple notion which the public can latch onto. I’m really excited about the growing awareness of climate change and how it’s also sparking so many other assessments of beliefs and habits.
