sunrise or sunset

Uncategorized: sunrise or sunset

I recently had a discussion with a mate about the difference between sunset and sunrise from the perspective of light. If you were placed in a completely foreign environment and were not aware of the time, would there be any characteristics of light that would lead you to assume (or know) that it was morning or evening? If we simply sat  and watched, we would see it getting lighter or darker. So we came up with a little experiment to test our powers of perception. I have created a gallery of sunrise and sunset images that I have shot over the years.  There are 16 images in total, have a look at each one and see if you can tell if it’s morning or evening. Enjoy!

Beautiful photographs, Adam. For me, personally, it’s a different feeling when watching a sunrise compared to when watching a sunset. I felt those different feelings looking at your photographs, though my instinct may not be correct! What an interesting concept …

Cheers Mikki. I think it is quite mystical the way light provokes feeling and emotion, particularly at sunrise an sunset. What an incredible spectacle we are privy to each day of our lives. :)

I have liked the fact that the world looks exactly the same at these times of dawn and dusk, 6am and 6pm. I love both equally-though admittedly view the latter more regularly. I’ll see how I go on your site Adz.

    Hi Adam,

    Great Photos!!!!!!!!

I think the question you have posed regarding sunrise/ sunset is very interesting and it is something that I have also contemplated before…I think you can tell. As Mikki said, there are different feelings evoked at the opposing times of the day, and the light can be quite different…
