this wall is yours

diesel-wall.gifCan you honestly say that you’ve never been tempted to indulge in a spot of urban graffiti? Whether it be a message scrawled in Sharpie across a toilet door or a rainbow-infused masterpiece spanning the width of an otherwise mundane building, graffiti can enhance or detract from the urban landscape (depending on the eye of the beholder). But whichever way you see it, there’s no denying that graffiti has become a veritable form of art and self-expression. Ever in sync with the pulse of pop culture, fashion house Diesel – an avid supporter of emerging creative genius – has created Diesel Wall, an international art contest aiming to bring intriguing, inspiring, insightful, inciting contemporary ideas to giant urban canvases in city centres around the world. The competition, originating five years ago, is dedicated to young artists and designers, offering them the opportunity to showcase their works on an extraordinary scale: monumental, freestanding vertical walls in the centres of world’s most iconic cities. The ultimate goal of the project is to salvage what prominent precious public space is left and use it as the most public of canvases. Launched on March 3, this year’s Diesel Wall art contest will make walls in Manchester, Barcelona, Zurich and NY available to the creative whim of a group of select young, inspiring artists from somewhere on the planet who submit their designs online.

I was talking with a friend the other day about the idea of purchasing advertising space not to promote a product or service, but simply to spread goodwill and enthusiasm for life. Why does this not already happen? The ultimate community service…
