As winter is fast-approaching, the summer and all it entails will sadly be missed. The hazy long nights, barbeques, holidays and festivals are over and yet again we endure another winter – albeit a mild winter for those of us in sunny Brisbane. Just as the southern hemisphere says goodbye to summer, the northern hemisphere is welcoming in theirs and if you’re over that way or planning on going there soon, make sure you incorporate one of the many epic summer music and arts festivals into your intinerary. There are the classic and world-renowned, such as Glastonbury Festival, which injects £73 million in the UK economy every year and the picturesque Fuji Festival in Japan but as these become bigger, younger and more commercial, the search for the ideal festival – true to the music, the fans and the environment is harder to find.
In 2006 I was fortunate enough to go to Bonnaroo Festival held on a 700 acre farm in Nashville Tennessee and it is by far the best festival I have ever been to. With a strong crowd of 100,000 people, who all camped on site, the event’s organisation was seemless, the ambience was relaxed and welcoming and the environmental impact was always considered. And every week in my email account I will receive a reminder about this year’s Bonnaroo Festival and what great artists are going. What is your international festival wish list? For me I would start in Rio de Janeiro at Carnival, Bonnaroo in Tennessee, Shambhala in Canada, The Big Chill festival and the Reading and Leeds Festival in the UK, Benicassim in Spain and to finish, Fuji Festival in Japan. Happy summer Northern Hemisphere!
