map cafe series program

Who are we? … How do we create? … What stirs us? …

For anyone who has ever been entertained, inspired, intrigued, educated, challenged or encouraged by map magazine over the past nine years, we proudly invite you to the launch of the map cafe series at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Ever since the 15th-century Middle East, the cafe has been known as the quintessential social gathering place. Cultural barriers were dissipated, creativity flowed freely, minds met, ideas were born and lifelong friendships were forged. Artists, bohemians, intellectuals and socialites would congregate en masse and in solitude to read books, scribble in journals, listen to music and philosophise about the world in general. Now, in the 21st century, while the world has changed, the map cafe series embodies that same community spirit composed of a complex patchwork of interesting characters. The map cafe series, taking place on Friday September 12 from 6:30 pm, brings together a collection of curious, creative and fascinating minds for a night of conversation, music and inspiration.  Check out the program below for more info.

PROGRAM OF EVENTS

Chris McGrath

Environmental lawyer Chris McGrath will present Al Gore’s Climate Change presentation, as seen in An Inconvenient Truth.

Paul Fairweather

An introduction to TED. As one of the lucky few Australians who has attended the TED conference, architect Paul Fairweather will give a short chat about his experience and enlightenment at TED.

Ted Talk Video #01 – Who are we? Jill Bolte Taylor
Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had
a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions – motion, speech, self-awareness –
shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

Ted Talk Video #02 – How do we create? Yves Behar
Over the past decade, Yves Behar and his firm, fuseproject, have become the design group
that companies turn to for a game-changing idea. Take the re-invention of the Bluetooth
headset, or the re-invigoration of the Birkenstock line; or Behar’s LED-chic Leaf Lamp
for Herman Miller. Yves and his team also designed the green bunny ears on the OLPC laptop.

Ted Talk Video #03 – What stirs us? Chris Abani
Nigerian author Chris Abani was imprisoned three times for his writing, including a tortuous
stint in solitary confinement on death row, Chris coped with his horrific experiences by
transforming them into a harrowing series of poems, which were published on his
eventual release.

Zac Hurren Trio
The night will then play out with an exclusive live performance from jazz sensation, Zac Hurren.

This is a free event, however please register your spot with alice@mapmagazine.com.au or at map’s facebook.
