Before the world’s next new tallest building is even finished, plans to out do the Burj Dubai are already underway. There’s the Mubarak Tower in Kuwait, the Nakheel Tower in Dubai and the Mile Tower in Saudi Arabia and the most outlandish of them all – the Jumeirah City project, which is expected to include six different towers that twist into one 2.5 km-high tower. The building is so tall that its main elevator is, in fact, a vertical 200 km-per-hour bullet train. Designed to resemble a city in the sky, The Jumeirah City project will consume 37,000 mega watts/hour/year but, as its plans show, the building has been designed to generate most of the energy required through wind, thermal and solar power. Can you imagine working on this building and how scary it would be? When building Dubai’s first iconic building, the Burj al Arab, it was so hot that the cement was setting too quickly. To overcome this, builders transported the cement mix with ice, so that when it got to the top of the building the ice would have melted and the cement would be ready to mix. Can you imagine the practicalities that will need to be overcome to build Jumeirah City? But, Dubai always manages to amaze and I’m sure that Jumeirah City is no exception.
