Every year we can read about the top 100 men and women whose power, talent or moral example are transforming the world - thanks to Time Magazine. Which makes me wonder about those persons who have the drive, ability, inspiration and intention to transform the world, but may be unable to given the circumstances they were born into. Burundi, the 9th poorest African country, is certainly not overly rich in wealth and resources. And perhaps it is precisely for this reason the eco-resort Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika, in Bujumbura, has as its operational philosophy “mas con menos” or “the most with the least”. To put “the least” into context, as per information from the CIA World Fact Book: 68% of its 8.7 million people live below the “poverty line”; 6% of the 6.4 children born per every female, die at birth; and a further 6% of the population has HIV. Only one in two children go to school. The country continues to recover from an ethnic-based war that lasted for over a decade resulting in more than 200,000 deaths. And might I add, don’t ever let my wife think you are after the kids - she will not be happy. Still, think of it this way… with me at my best and you guys at your worst, I don’t have a chance. Nor would I want to eat you: yuk! I mean no offense. Why then, are us Arachnids (scorpions, spiders, solifugids, amblypygids, Pseudoscorpions and ticks amoungst others) some of the most misunderstood creatures on earth? Look at me for example, a Rain Spider, or also called a Huntsman. This is a picture of me with one of my best buddies, Jonathan Leeming, the author of “Scorpions of Southern Africa”… Continue reading ‘Why do people not like me?’
