UNHATE

Conscience: UNHATE

This new campaign from United Colors of Benetton, entitled UNHATE, cleverly places world leaders with opposed ideologies in amorous liplock.  The cheeky campaign is intended to illustrate the fact that hate and love are not as far away from each other as we think.

MAP MAGAZINE’S SPONSORED SWING

Conscience: MAP MAGAZINE’S SPONSORED SWING

A few months ago, inspired by the work of Jeff Waldman, map magazine sponsored a swing in South America in the hope that it would help spread simple joy to all those who came in contact with it. Today we received word from Jeff  (who will also be one of the many exciting speakers at the upcoming TEDx Brisbane) as to the exact location of our swing: “Here’s your swing!  We hung it in a Chilean silver mine railroad boneyard.  The trains are from the 18th and 19th centuries, and would transport silver from the mines in Potosí to the ocean.  The trip through the salt flats would get the best of them, and they’d eventually rust away and become abandoned. The yard sits just on the outskirts of Uyuni, and sees frequent visitors because it’s so unique.”  Thanks guys! We’re so proud to be a part of your amazing project.

WANGARI MAATHAI

Dreamers: WANGARI MAATHAI

Today we heard the news that Wangari Maathai passed away from cancer. For the map team, she was such an inspiration as much for her benevolent, passionate spirit as for her advocacy for the planet. While it’s a sad loss for the world, Wangari will always inspire us to be the change we want to see in the world. Here is an interview that our managing editor, Carl Lindgren, did with Wangari back in 2007.

Design: QUINTETTO

Though it may seem that fish live in a world of virtual silence, in the case of the Quintetto installation, they unwittingly become musical instruments. Quintetto is based on the study of casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds, revealing what its creators call the ‘invisible concerts’ of everyday life.
The vertical movements of the 5 fish in the aquariums is captured by a videocamera, which then uses computer software to translate their movements in digital sound signals.

Travel: LEARN

For many people, the desire to learn is never satiated. Be it a new language, a musical instrument or a difficult dance move, the world is an endless source of opportunities to learn. Over the course of 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38 thousand miles, an exploding volcano, 2 cameras and almost a terabyte of footage, three friends made an amazing series of short films based on movement, learning and food. LEARN is the second in the series.

THE YOU’RE-LOVED SELF-ESTEEMIZER

Design: THE YOU’RE-LOVED SELF-ESTEEMIZER

Sometimes, when left to dwell with nothing but your own thoughts for company, your self-esteem can take a beating with no one there to provide you with encouragement or friendly positive affirmations. New York entertainment bible Time Out, sensing the abundance of loneliness felt by many denizens of the Big Apple, has created the You’re-Loved Self-Esteemizer. The clever infographic is intended to lead readers from ‘woe to serenity’.

One of the world’s most coveted restaurants, Ferran Adria’s elBulli in Spain is also one of the most intriguing, with only 8000 guests per year being offered the chance to dine in its lauded dining room. As elBulli makes the move from Michelin-starred gourmet paragon to culinary academy (set to open in 2014), here is a fascinating look behind the scenes from filmmaker Marcus Gaab.

MAKE YOUR GRANDMA FEEL LIKE A SUPERHERO

Culture: MAKE YOUR GRANDMA FEEL LIKE A SUPERHERO

Usually when we think of methods to try to cheer up our grandparents, it involves bringing them sweet treats and simply spending some quality time with them. But when French photographer Sacha Goldberger discovered that his 91-year-old Hungarian grandmother Frederika was feeling a little lonely and depressed, he took things a little further. Sacha suggested that Frederika dress up in superhero garb and pose for a series of outrageous photos that brought out her inner heroine. The result? Frederika couldn’t stop smiling.

The beauty of Frederika’s story is that she was actually responsible for saving the lives of 10 Jewish people while living in Budapest during World War II, by hiding them in different places helping them to avoid capture and persecution. Sacha has even created a MySpace page for his beloved grandmother, so that her many fans can pass on their admiration for the mighty 91-year-old superhero.

OBSERVATION TOWER ON THE RIVER MUR

Design: OBSERVATION TOWER ON THE RIVER MUR

Peeking out above the treetops, standing majestically over over the River Mur in Austria (forming the border with Slovenia) is a curious looking structure that could well play a starring role in an epic sci-fi film. In reality, it’s an observation tower designed by German architects terrain:loenhart&mayr. The double spiral of the structure is formed by a twisting spiral staircase, which allows those ascending and descending to weave through each other’s paths. The observation tower itself is intended to resemble a tree, with its trunk-like base and branch-like tubes closer to the top.
